Nicol David made it a 20-2 head-to-head against Jenny Duncalf today as she won her 7th Malaysian Open title in a row at The Curve mall in Kuala Lumpur. The packed mall was treated to quality squash between the top two players on the WISPA Tour.
The first game saw Nicol dominate with a 5/0 lead as Jenny seemed to take a while to warm up. A surprising tin by Nicol allowed Jenny into the game at 1/5. The Malaysian continued a comfortable lead with the support of her home crowd as Jenny was seen running all around the court, trying to narrow the gap. A few mishits along the side walls kept Jenny frustrated and Nicol sealed the first game 11/5 with a fantastic cross-court shot.
The second game was more intense as both girls pranced around in pink and white outfits. Jenny started with a 2/0 lead but it didn’t take long before Nicol came ahead 4/2. Unforced errors from Jenny kept putting her behind but she played some lovely shots in this game, keeping Nicol on her toes. The girls were tied at 7/7 when Jenny began to draw a lead moving up 8/7, 9/7 and 10/7 with a dead ball. The Comeback Queen came from behind to take the second game 12/10 as Jenny hit a down ball.
Nicol was anxious to finish the match, coming on court before the break time was over, keeping herself warm and bouncy, practising some shots as Jenny gathered her thoughts by court side. A deceptive cross-court nick by the world champ gave her a 3/1 lead in the third as Jenny was sent in the opposite direction. As with the trend in this tournament so far, there were some moments in this game with questionable calls by the ref. Nicol was now up 6/4. More frustration by Jenny led to more tins and Nicol reeled in three points in a row. A dead ball by the Malaysian off the front wall put her ahead 9/4. At 10/5, Jenny managed to save one game ball and soon enough, Nicol made another home-run, winning her 7th Malaysian Open title, matching the 7th KL Open title she won in March this year!
It was a fantastic evening of squash today and it was good to see the huge turnout of squash enthusiasts in the mall to witness world quality squash at play. The Malaysian Open, now part of the prestigious WISPA World Series has definitely seen a good kick-off to the second season of 2011. Stay tuned to the upcoming tournaments!
