Out with a Bang!

My other favourite past time, after squash.

When the fireworks go off every year around midnight on the 1st hour of the new year, it is in honour of my birthday. Or that is what I was told when I was younger and believed until recently, for my birthday is on the 1st of January. But it turned out that the fireworks are not just in Kempton Park, South Africa where I was born, but that the whole world celebrates with me on that day. 😉

I grew up in sunny South Africa in a small place called Secunda. Here, I have a lot of memories of endless adventures and mischief.

I started playing squash with my sister because my parents used to take us along to the squash club. My parents were recreational players but with a big interest for the game. They started off coaching us and ended up owning a club of their own for a few years while I was in High School.

Home for me is in Amsterdam at the moment. The more I travel, the more I realize that this is my ‘happy place’. I feel like I am on holiday all the time. Cruising around on my scooter or newly inherited boat, it doesn’t get much better than that. I do try and make it back to South Africa once a year. Nothing like a fix of South African sun, food, humour and catching up with friends and family.

My personality can be described as easy going and adventurous. I’m always in for a good laugh.

I realized over the years that I love training! It is very difficult for me to sit still, so my unhappiest moments are when I am injured or ill.

I’ll probably be involved in squash for the rest of my life. But I would also love to do the things that I have not been able to do much until now. I would definitely take up skiing or snowboarding, get into more mountain biking and all sorts of adventure sports. Running a marathon is also right up there on my list of things to do. Besides all that, I like music, wine and playing drums. My drumkit keeps me indoors and relaxed, away from squash. When I go for a holiday, anywhere where there is sun, beach and cold beer will be fine. Add a few adventures to it and I am in heaven!

I only possess very basic cooking skills, but believe it or not, I can eat a fair amount of food every day! Being South African, you can always wake me up for a nice barbeque or a steak. My other favourite food at the moment is Ethiopian. It helps you run like Gebrselassie!

I like music a lot, I’m a real rock chick, but I like dance music as well. There’s nothing like a good rock concert, but I also enjoy a dance festival with good dj’s. I am famous for my drum stick obsession. Along with the help of my drum stick partner, Nicol David, I have a collection of more than 60 sticks at home!

My life’s philosophy is to live life to the fullest, never say never.
