CIMB Group, one of Malaysia’s and ASEAN’s leading banks is now also backing the bid!
As our SquashStars Ambassador, Nicol David’s core sponsor, CIMB announced today that ahead of the Kuala Lumpur Open—it is financially supporting World Squash Federation’s (WSF) bid group’s presentation to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board in St. Petersburg, Russia for the inclusion of squash into the 2020 Olympic Games Programme.
“CIMB has long been a supporter of squash, so we wouldn’t want to miss this opportunity to help the sport win a place at the Olympic Games,” said Datuk Seri Nazir Razak, group chief executive, CIMB Group.
“A successful bid would lift the status of the sport worldwide and help professional squash players tremendously,” he added.
To mark the sponsorship announcement, Nazir inked his signature on the BackTheBid 2020 sign and handed it over to Datuk Nicol David, who represented WSF.
“As the WSF Olympic Bid Partner, we are currently lending a hand, financially, in terms of funding the bid group’s presentation in St. Petersburg such as trip costs.
“We remain open towards any other ways we can help, and we will continue to work close with WSF to see what else we can do,” said Nazir.
Surely there will be no individual more delightful than Nicol David, who has tirelessly back the Squash 2020 Bid since the failure of the 2016 edition.
“CIMB has been the biggest supporter for squash while being my core sponsor since my first world title.
“I am glad they see the importance of squash getting an Olympic spot, and I thank them for coming in with such force to give WSF a boost for the campaign,” said Nicol.
The bid group will include World No 1 and seven-time world champion Nicol, men’s World No 1 player Ramy Ashour and members of the WSF.
